Farewell, Javy Lopez

This morning I awoke to disappointing news about one of my all-time favorite Braves players. Catcher Javy Lopez is retiring.

My heart had soared earlier this winter at the news that Javy had been resigned by the Braves. Sure, he would be in the minors, but I had no doubt that was just temporary until he proved his mettle and clinched the position as Brian McCann's number one back-up. Alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Javy's 37 years old. Not exactly an old goat by any means, but lifetime work as a catcher in the Bigs takes its toll. In recent seasons he hasn't posted the huge offensive numbers he became known for in his prime. And, then there is the matter of defense. His mechanics behind the plate just aren't as well-oiled as they once were.

But, you know, what, that's okay. The accomplishments of his career in its entirety are impressive. A three-time All Star catcher, he hit .290 with 867 RBIs and 263 home runs for his career. He set a Major League record when he hit 42 homers as a catcher in 2003. He hit the first double and the first grand slam in Turner Field.

Javy electrified fans with a down-to-earth charisma and gritty determination that has come to characterize the Braves as an organization in the last 15 years. His energy, his drive, and his amazing crowd-appeal will be missed just as sorely as his talent.
